A Note From Judith

I want to say a big thank you to all of you who sent comments and personal stories, especially about your dual, concurrent careers. My favorite book these days is my coffee-stained world atlas because it lets me locate you all over the world: the Maldive Islands; Rome, Italy; Mumbai, India; Gardnerville, Nevada; Westbank, British Columbia; and many other places. So if you'd like to improve my knowledge of geography, do forward this newsletter to any friend who may enjoy joining a growing international network of women in aviation helping women!

Today's Feature Article

COUNTING BY TENS

Recent research reports that people are more likely to listen to ideas and buy items with a number in the sevens, such as The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, or $17.77 for an impulse buy at the store cash register. But I am old-fashioned...I prefer tens!

It is easier to round off the years of each decade of my life up to 100, or to figure out a restaurant tip by multiplying the tab by 10% plus half (or 20%), or to assess how I feel on a rating scale of 1-10. Tens are simple, and they are sensible -- at least to me.

So today I am writing in tens: Ten Secrets To Success, all of which can help us better fly an airplane and live a better life.

Ten Secrets To Success

Investor's Business Daily newspaper has spent years analyzing leaders and successful people in all walks of life. Each day it features a successful person to highlight one of "ten traits that, when combined, can turn dreams into reality." The IBD's Ten Secrets To Success are:

1. How you think is everything. - Be positive. Think success, not failure. Beware of a negative environment.
2. Decide upon your true dreams and goals. - Write down your specific goals and develop a plan to reach them.
3. Take action. - Goals are nothing without action. Overcome fear and get started. Do it.
4. Never stop learning. - Go back to school or read books. Get training and acquire skills.
5. Be persistent and work hard. - Success is a marathon, not a sprint. Never give up.
6. Learn to analyze details. - Get all the facts, all the input. Learn from your mistakes.
7. Focus your time and money. - Don't let other people or things distract you.
8. Don't be afraid to innovate; be different. - Following the herd is a sure way to mediocrity.
9. Deal and communicate with people effectively. - No person is an island. Learn to understand and motivate others.
10. Be honest and dependable. Take responsibility. - Otherwise numbers 1-9 won't matter.

Think of a current personal or aviation goal. It might be obtaining a rating to fly a bigger airplane, finishing a degree, improving relationships, finding or changing a job, leading an organization to bigger challenges, or even your retirement. Next, picture and create a vision of achieving your goal. Apply the IBD Ten Secrets To Success to your vision - add specific ideas and actions that are necessary to reach your goal. Then, E-mail your insights and results to me at judith@shairing.com. In reply, I'll comment and add some new perspectives and questions for you.
